Head Protection - Checklist for Training Employees
OSHA repeatedly reminds us to properly train employees to use and care for PPE, but because each worksite is different, OSHA does not provide a specific list of training items. However, it does provide a general checklist for training employees on how to use and care for head protection. Employers should ensure that employees are familiar with the following concepts:
- Understand why head protection is necessary due to the workplace hazards that threaten their heads.
- Explain how the head protection will protect them.
- Understand the limitations of the head protection.
- Know when they must wear the head protection.
- Know how to properly wear the protective head gear.
- Confidently adjust straps and other parts for a comfortable and effective fit.
- Clean and disinfect hard hats.
- Identify signs of wear, such as:
- Cracked, torn, frayed, or otherwise deteriorated suspension systems
- Deformed, cracked, or perforated brims or shells
- Flaking, chalking, or loss of surface gloss
