Head Protection - Checklist for Training Employees

OSHA repeatedly reminds us to properly train employees to use and care for PPE, but because each worksite is different, OSHA does not provide a specific list of training items. However, it does provide a general checklist for training employees on how to use and care for head protection. Employers should ensure that employees are familiar with the following concepts:

• Understand why head protection is necessary due to the workplace hazards that threaten their heads.
• Explain how the head protection will protect them.
• Understand the limitations of the head protection.
• Know when they must wear the head protection.
• Know how to properly wear the protective head gear.
• Confidently adjust straps and other parts for a comfortable and effective fit.
• Clean and disinfect hard hats.
• Identify signs of wear, such as:
  • Cracked, torn, frayed, or otherwise deteriorated suspension systems
  • Deformed, cracked, or perforated brims or shells
  • Flaking, chalking, or loss of surface gloss
