Need for Foot and Leg Protection
Foot and leg gear offer protection from falling and rolling objects, splashing chemicals, and more. Some of the potential hazards that would require foot and leg protection include:
- Heavy objects (such as barrels or tools) rolling onto or falling onto employees" feet
- Sharp objects (such as nails or spikes) puncturing the sole side of non-protective shoe wear
- Molten metal or chemicals splashing on feet or legs
- Hot or wet surfaces
- Slippery surfaces
For these reasons, 29 CFR 1910.136 details the types of (and requirements for) protective footwear in workplaces with hazardous conditions.
