Respiratory Protection
OSHA estimates that 5 million workers in 1.3 million workplaces throughout the United States wear respirators. Respirators protect against many workplace hazards, including (but not limited to) the following:
- Oxygen deficient environments (which you learned about in a previous section)
- Harmful dusts
- Fogs
- Smokes
- Mists
- Gases
- Vapors
- Sprays
As already mentioned in a previous unit, exposure could lead to serious illness or death. OSHA details the requirements for respirators in its standard 29 CFR 1910.134.
Respirators work in two ways: air purifying (which remove contaminants from the air) and atmosphere supplying (which provide clean air from another source). You will learn about each in detail.
