Type of Foot and Leg Protection

Foot and leg protection include the following types of gear:

Leggings, which protect the lower legs and feet from heat hazards such as molten metal or welding sparks. Leggings have safety snaps that allow for quick removal of the gear.

Metatarsal guards, which are made from aluminum, steel, fiber or plastic. These are strapped to the outside of shoes and protect the instep from impact and pressure.

Toe guards, which are made from steel, aluminum, or plastic. These go over the toes of regular shoes and only protect the toes from impact and compression.

Combination foot and shin guards, which may be used in combination with toe guards if the employees need a higher level of protection.

Safety shoes, which have impact-resistant toes and heat-resistant soles to protect against hot work surfaces (this is necessary in many industries, such as roofing, paving, and hot metal industries). Safety shoes serve a variety of purposes; the design will vary depending on the need of the gear. For example, some safety shoes might have metal insoles to protect against puncture wounds; some might be electrically conductive for use in explosive atmospheres; some might be electrically non-conductive to protect from workplace electrical hazards.
