Nonpotable Water
Employers must also take the proper steps when setting up and maintaining campsites in regard to nonpotable water (such as water used for firefighting or other industrial purposes).
29 CFR 1910.142(a)(1) asserts the following in regard to nonpotable water on campsites:
- All temporary work sites must be adequately drained.
- The camp must be located in an area that will not "endanger any domestic or public water supply."
- Work sites must not be prone to periodic flooding.
- All work sites must be "graded, ditched, and rendered free from depressions in which water may become a nuisance."
- Because of the potential for mosquitoes in areas with standing water, temporary work sites must not be located within 200 feet of swamps, pools, sinkholes, or other surface collections of water. Note: Employers may disregard this if areas of standing water can be treated with mosquito control measures.
