Sleeping Facilities - Beds
It is important that those living in temporary workspaces are comfortable while sleeping. 29 CFR 1919.142 provides details regarding requirements for beds, including the types of beds that may be used and the spacing of these beds.
- Rooms must contain "beds, cots, or bunks, and suitable storage facilities such as wall lockers for clothing and personal articles."
- Beds (or cots/bunks) must be spaced a minimum of 36 inches (both laterally and end to end) apart.
- Beds must be elevated at least 12 inches from the floor.
- If the facility uses double-deck bunks, they cannot be spaced less than 48 inches (both laterally and end to end).
- The minimum "clear space" between the lower and upper bunk cannot be smaller than 27 inches.
- Triple-deck bunks are never allowed.
