Sleeping Facilities

29 CFR 1910.142(a)(2) states that sleeping quarters (along with kitchens and dining halls) must be a minimum of 500 feet from any area in which livestock is kept. 29 CFR 1910.142(b)(2) through (b)(8) provides the following further stipulations regarding sleeping facilities:

  • Any room used specifically for sleeping must have a minimum of 50 square feet of floor space per occupant.
  • Any room used for sleeping must have a ceiling that is a minimum of 7 feet high.
  • All living quarters (including sleeping facilities) must have windows.
  • The windows cannot be less than 1/10th of the floor area.
  • At least one-half of each window must open to allow ventilation.
  • All openings (doors and windows) must be screened with 16-mesh material.
  • All screen doors must have self-closing devices.
