Toilets for Employees - Shared Toilet Rooms
Toilet rooms may be shared (examples of shared toilet rooms include those in multi-family shelters and in barracks-style facilities). In these cases, there must be separate toilet rooms for each sex. These toilet rooms must be marked "for men" and "for women" using "signs printed in English and in the native language of the persons occupying the camp, or marked with easily understood pictures or symbols." If the toilet rooms for men and women are within the same building, then a solid wall or partition must separate them. This wall or partition must go from the floor to the ceiling or roof.
The number of water closets or privy seats depends upon the maximum number of persons (for each sex) that may inhabit the camp. There must be one unit for every 15 people; the minimum is two units.
20 CFR 1910.142(d)(4) and (d)(5) detail these above-mentioned requirements for shared toilet rooms.
