Toilets for Employees - Toilet Room Details

29 CFR 1910.142(d)(1) states that "toilet facilities adequate for the capacity of the camp shall be provided." It is up to the employer to determine the number of toilets that constitute an adequate amount.

Toilet rooms must meet the following requirements, as detailed in 29 CFR 1919.142(d):

  • Each toilet room must be accessible without an individual passing through a sleeping room.
  • A toilet room must be within 200 feet of the door of each sleeping room.
  • A toilet room cannot be closer than 100 feet to any sleeping room, dining room, lunch area, or kitchen.
  • Toilet rooms must have a window. This window cannot be less than 6 square feet. It can only open directly to the outside area (unless "satisfactorily ventilated").
  • Every outside opening must be screened using 16-mesh material.
  • No fixture, water closet, chemical toilet, or urinal shall be located in a room used for other than toilet purposes.
