Toilets for Employees - Water Closet Requirements

20 CFR 1910.142(d)(7) through (d)(10) detail the requirements for water closets. (You may remember from a previous slide that water closets are "toilet facilities maintained within a toilet room for the purpose of both defecation and urination and which are flushed with water"). The stipulations for water closets are as follows:

  • The water closet must be located within a toilet room. This applies to all water closets installed on or after August 31, 1971.
  • Each toilet room must be lighted through either natural light or by safe artificial light throughout the day and night. (See "Lighting" for details on the light level that the standard requires for toilet rooms.)
  • Each privy, water closet, or chemical toilet compartment must have an adequate supply of toilet paper. (The standard does not provide details regarding the term adequate supply.)
  • Privies and toilet rooms must be cleaned once daily at minimum and must be kept in a sanitary condition.
  • In camps where public sewers are available, all sewer lines and floor drains from buildings must connect to the sewer.
