Drums and Containers That Should Not Be Moved - Avoiding Ruptures or Spillage
29 CFR 1910.120(j)(1)(ix) states that drums and containers that "cannot be moved without rupture, leakage, or spillage" must first be emptied into a "sound container" before being moved.* During the transfer, employees must use "a device classified for the material being transferred."
While the standard does not define sound container or device, employers should use their knowledge (from this unit) to reference the appropriate standards. This will aid in selecting sound containers and in the safe transfer process before movement of the hazardous materials.
