Emergency Preparedness and Prevention
Emergency situations can occur in even the safest facilities. Given the nature of hazardous wastes, an emergency that gets out of hand can endanger the surrounding community and environment. As such, emergency preparedness is essential for all owners, operators, and personnel involved in hazardous waste storage, treatment, and disposal.
The EPA stipulates that at least one employee must be present at the facility or on-call and able to reach the facility in a short period of time. This individual, known as the emergency coordinator, has the responsibility to coordinate all emergency response efforts. He or she must be completely familiar with all aspects of the contingency plan, the facility operations and activities, and the location and nature of the waste being handled.
