Emptying Damaged Drums and Containers

Employees must empty damaged drums and containers, and then properly discard of them. When emptying the drums, employees must use the methods and devices appropriate for the contents of the drum or container.

Employers must also inform employees of the following:

• The hazard warnings that are on any labeled drums
• The hazards that may occur when removing the soil or coverings around the drum or container
• The hazards of dealing with unlabeled drums or containers when the contents are unknown
