Keeping Drum Movement to a Minimum

Sites should always keep the movement of containers or drums to a minimum. An important part of this is the way that the site itself is organized. Employers should keep this in mind when setting up the site and its operations.

29 CFR 1910.120(j)(1)(iii) suggests that, when possible, personnel inspect the drums and containers to ensure their integrity during movement.

This is not possible in some situations (for example, with drums or containers that are buried, stacked behind other drums, or stacked high). In these situations, the drums or containers must be "moved to an accessible location and inspected prior to further handling."
