Prior to Drum or Container Handling - Preliminary Inspection Details (Drum Type)
During the preliminary inspection, the crew should identify the type of drum. You will learn about the types of drums in the next section. For now, note that there are many types of drums:
- Drums with radioactive waste
- Drums that might contain explosive or shock-sensitive wastes
- Bulging drums
- Drums containing packaged laboratory wastes (lab packs)
- Leaking, open, or deteriorated drums
- Buried drums
There are also "special drum types." These include the following drums:
- Polyethylene or PVC-lined drums
- Exotic metal drums
- Single-walled drums (that are used as pressure vessels)
- Laboratory packs
