Required Regulations for Drums and Containers - 49 CFR 174
49 CFR 174 (titled "Carriage by Rail") details DOT requirements for transporting hazardous materials via rail. It provides the following information, broken into the following subparts:
- General requirements for transporting hazardous materials by rail (Subpart A)
- Who can operate the railways (Subpart B)
- Handling and loading requirements (Subpart C)
- Handling placarded rail cars, transport vehicles, and freight containers (Subpart D)
- Transporting Class I explosives (Subpart E)
- Requirements for transporting Class 2 materials (Subpart F)
- Requirements for transporting Class 3 materials (Subpart G)
- Requirements for transporting Division 6.1 (poisonous) materials (Subpart J)
- Requirements for transporting Class 7 materials (Subpart K)
Employers should consult this standard when shipping hazardous materials by railway.
Note that Subparts H and I are reserved. According to the U.S. Government Publishing Office, the term "reserved" works as a "...place holder [sic] within the Code of Federal Regulations. An agency uses '[Reserved]' to simply indicate that it may insert regulatory information into this location sometime in the future. Occasionally '[Reserved]' is used to indicate that a portion of the CFR was intentionally left empty and not accidentally dropped due to a printing or computer error."
