Shipping and Transport - Labeling Hazardous Waste for Transport
The generator of hazardous waste must place a placard on the load of hazardous material. If the generator is not the person or company that is transporting the hazardous material, then the generator must give the initial transporter the appropriate placards. Placards are similar to package labels, except that they go on the vehicle itself. As such, they must be durable enough to withstand wind and weather. Department of Transportation (DOT) labels must meet the following requirements:
- Be printed in the appropriate color
- Be durable to the extent that they can withstand exposure to wind and weather
- Be made to measure at least 3.9 inches long on each side
