Types of Containers - Drums That May Contain Explosive or Shock-Sensitive Waste
One of the possible types of containers is a drum that may contain explosive or shock-sensitive waste. You have already learned about explosives (as defined by OSHA) and learned the definition of shock-sensitive materials.
If after a visual inspection a drum or container has been determined to hold explosive or shock-sensitive waste, then "specialized assistance" must be consulted. (Note that OSHA does not stipulate who or what "specialized assistance" is.)
If the drums or containers must be handled, then OSHA recommends the following steps, procedures, and precautions:
- Use extreme caution.
- Before handling the drums or containers, be sure that all nonessential personnel are a safe distance away.
- To initially handle the drums or containers, use a grappler unit (which is made for explosive containment).
- Palletize the drums prior to transport.
- Secure the drum or drums to pallets.
- To signal the beginning and completion of waste handling, use an alarm system. (You learned about this earlier in this unit.)
- Throughout the period of waste handling, be sure to maintain continuous communication with the Site Safety Officer and the command post.
