Types of Containers - Leaking, Open, and Deteriorated Drums

One of the possible types of containers is a leaking, open, or other deteriorated drum. Personnel should keep in mind that these drums or containers may hold sludge or semi-solids, which may change the procedures for moving or emptying these drums.

If these drums cannot be moved without rupturing, then employees should follow these procedures:

Immediately transfer the contents into another (sound) drum by using a pump that is appropriate for the liquid that is inside.
Use a drum grappler to place the contents into overpack containers.
