Decontamination Methods - Chemical Removal - Dissolving Contaminants
It is possible to use chemicals to remove surface contaminants by dissolving them in a solvent.
When doing so, it is vital that the solvent is chemically compatible with the equipment that is being cleaned: this is of utmost importance for decontamination of personal protective clothing made from organic materials, since they could be damaged (or dissolved by) organic solvents.
OSHA also notes that "care must be taken in selecting, using, and disposing of any organic solvents that may be flammable or potentially toxic." (Remember: organic solvents include alcohols, ethers, ketones, aromatics, straight-chain alkanes, and common petroleum products. You learn about this in detail in this unit.)
