Decontamination Plan
A Decontamination Plan is a part of a Site Safety Plan: this plan should be prepared before any personnel or equipment enter areas that might expose them to hazardous substances.
A Decontamination Plan should determine the following things:
- The number and layout of decontamination stations
- The decontamination equipment needed
- The appropriate decontamination methods
After determining the above-mentioned items, a Decontamination Plan should establish the following:
- The procedures to prevent contamination of clean areas
- The methods and procedures to minimize worker contact with contaminants during removal of personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE)
- The methods for disposing of clothing and equipment that are not completely decontaminated
Note that employers should revise the Decontamination Plan whenever the following things related to the site change:
- The type of personal protective clothing or equipment
- The site conditions
- The site hazards are re-assessed based on new information
