Decontamination Procedures - Maximizing Worker Protection with PPE
Another initial procedure for decontamination is developing SOPs that maximize worker protection. Many of these SOPs relate to personal protective equipment (PPE). Some of the specific examples that OSHA provides are as follows:
- Set specific procedures for dressing before entering the Exclusion Zone. (This will minimize the possibility of contaminating other areas.)
- Use all fasteners (zippers, buttons, snaps).
- Tuck boots and gloves under the sleeves and legs of the outer clothing (coveralls, bodysuit, or the like).
- Hoods that are not attached to the outer garment should be outside of the collar.
- Consider wearing a second pair of outer gloves over the sleeves of the outer garment.
- Tape all junctures. (This will ensure that contaminants do not enter the gloves, boots, or jackets.)
- Check all PPE prior to every use by looking for cuts, punctures, or other damage or wear.
- Inform employees that skin injuries (cuts and scratches) can make it easier for hazardous chemicals to enter the body; encourage employees to take care in covering and protecting these areas.
- Prohibit employees with large areas of skin damage for working on site until the area properly heals.
