Solvents - Dilute Bases
Dilute bases are bases diluted by another substance (such as water). Examples include detergents and soaps.
As a solvent, dilute bases help to decontaminate the following:
- Acid compounds
- Phenols (a class of chemical compounds that have a hydroxyl group bonded to an aromatic hydrocarbon group. An example is carbolic acid, which is C6H5OH.)
- Thiols (a class of chemical compounds that contain a carbon bonded to a sulfhydryl group)
- Some nitro and sulfonic compounds
