Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) are materials that may contain any of the primordial radionuclides or radioactive elements as they occur in nature, completely undisturbed by human activity. The following are some examples of NORM:

  • Radium
  • Uranium
  • Thorium
  • Potassium

When natural radioactive elements, which are present in very low concentrations in Earth's crust, are brought to the surface through human activities, the resulting products are known as technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM).
