Radiation Emergencies
Radiation emergencies can be intentional acts designed to hurt others, such as a terrorist attack, or accidents that occur when using radioactive material. The scale and types of radiation emergencies may range from an isolated occupational or medical overexposure of a person to a major catastrophe with global dimensions. If a radiation emergency occurs, you can take actions to protect yourself and others.
In a large-scale radiological release, such as a nuclear power plant accident or terrorist attack, the following advice has been tested and proven to provide maximum protection. (Note that these tips are targeted at civilians during a radiation emergency, such as a terrorist incident. Nevertheless, they are applicable to workers in an occupational setting who may find themselves in such an emergency.)
Get Inside
In a radiation emergency, you may be asked to get inside a building and take shelter for a period of time. Note the following:
- This action is called "sheltering in place."
- Get to the middle of the building or a basement, away from doors and windows.
Staying inside will reduce your exposure to radiation. Take the following precautions:
- Close and lock windows and doors.
- Take a shower, or wipe exposed parts of your body with a damp cloth.
- Drink bottled water, and eat food in sealed containers.
Stay Tuned
Emergency officials are trained to respond to disaster situations and will provide specific actions to help keep people safe. Be sure to stay informed, as follows:
- Get the latest information from radio, television, the Internet, mobile devices, and so forth.
- Emergency officials will provide information on where to go to get screened for contamination.
