Radiation Institutions & Agencies

There are three international organizations that provide recommended radiation protection levels:

  • The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • The International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU)

In the United States, there are four federal agencies responsible for establishing radiation protection regulations:

  • The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
  • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • The Department of Energy
  • The Department of Transportation

Federal agencies work with the above-mentioned international organizations to ensure that their regulations are based on internationally recognized scientific studies and comply with international radiation protection recommendations.
