Concussion Properties
When an arc flash occurs, it creates a concussive pressure wave referred to as an arc blast. Pressure waves generated by an arc flash explosion carry up to thousands of pounds per square inch of force. This can generate a peak pressure of up to 2,100 psi at the source of the arc flash. A blast pressure of 35-65 psi can be fatal.
An arc flash's explosion is extremely loud, reaching well over 140 dB. This decibel level is comparable to a gunshot or a jet engine at takeoff. In fact, the sound blast can rupture ear drums, causing temporary or permanent hearing loss. The louder or higher the decibel, the less exposure time is required for hearing loss to occur. Sounds at and above 140 dB present immediate danger to hearing.
