Foot Protection

Step and touch hazards, caused by ground potential rise, are a common hazard when working with high-voltage power transmissions systems. If there exists a potential for step and touch hazards, proper insulated footwear must be worn. In this situation, the NFPA 70E requires workers to wear dielectric footwear. Insulated soles must not be used as a primary means of protection.

Heavy-duty leather footwear, dielectric footwear, or both provides some protection from arc flashes and must be used in situations where the exposure level is greater than 4 cal/cm2. Protective footwear other than leather of dielectric may be used provided that it is tested to demonstrate no ignition, melting, or dripping at the estimated incident energy exposure or the minimum arc rating for the respective arc flash PPE category.
