If an Arc Flash Occurs
Engineering, administrative, and procedural controls are designed to reduce the likelihood of an arc flash as much as possible. As the causes of these events are sometimes undetermined, it is possible for an arc flash to occur even when all of the proper safety procedures are followed. Knowing what to do in the event an arc flash does occur will reduce the potential damage.
If an arc flash occurs while you are working, the most important thing to do is to evacuate from the site of the arc as quickly as possible. This applies whether you are injured by the blast or witness another worker injured. Getting help as quickly as possible will be more effective than potentially injuring yourself trying to rescue a co-worker.
If a fire breaks out, ensure the extinguisher used is rated correctly for electrical fires. Class C fire extinguishers are specifically designed for use on electrical equipment. A Class D extinguisher may be used as long as it is rated for use on combustible metals.
Alert other workers about the incident and have someone call 911. By remaining calm, getting help as quickly as possible, and wearing the proper PPE, you can reduce your chances of serious injury or death from an arc flash.
