Safety procedures require an organized understanding of the likelihood of equipment to produce an arc flash and the conditions they could present if they did. Arc flash hazards are classified by the incident energy exposure that could result in the event of an arc flash. This value is measured in calories per centimeter squared (cal/cm2), providing an idea of the amount of energy to which a worker's body would be exposed.

As an example, a lighter flame applied to the skin for one second would present between one-half and one cal/cm2. At 1.2 cal/cm2 for one second, second-degree burns will occur. Arc flash events regularly release between 30 and 60 cal/cm2.
