Initial Exposure Assessment

The initial exposure assessment must be based on the following criteria:

• Results of employee exposure monitoring, unless a negative exposure assessment has been made; and
• Observations, information, or calculations indicating employee exposure to asbestos, including any previous monitoring.

For Class I asbestos work, until employers document that employees will not be exposed in excess of the 8-hour time weighted average permissible exposure limits and short-term exposure limits, employers must assume that employee exposures are above those limits.
