Responsibilities - Site Visitors, Manufacturers, and After-Market Installers
In addition to employers and employees, several other groups carry responsibilities for safety when at a construction site, such as the following:
- Site visitors
- Manufacturers
- After-market installers
Site Visitors
Department of Transportation (DOT) personnel and inspectors are two examples of potential site visitors. The potential for backover accidents is reduced greatly if all people on the site, including visitors, are aware of standard operating procedures and safety precautions. Quality control officers, safety officers, and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all people onsite are aware of basic safety precautions.
Manufacturers
Construction equipment manufacturers contribute to the safety of construction sites by actions such as the following:
- Minimizing the hazards of blind areas of construction vehicles and equipment
- Reducing blind areas during the design of new models
- Incorporating video cameras and proximity warning technology to help monitor the presence of workers in blind areas
- Including collision avoidance technology on equipment
- Specifying in the owner's manual any upgrades or changes in lever, button, or pedal locations from model to model and the locations of blind areas on the equipment
After-Market Installers
After-market installers are responsible for reducing backover accidents on construction sites by ensuring that all safety equipment is properly installed according to the manufacturer's specifications. Installers must make sure that the equipment operates as intended if after-market options are added to the equipment.
