Statistics
Because accidents occur in the workplace, safeguarding the work environment against hazards is the main goal of OSHA regulations, such as CFR 1926. Note the following statistics:
- According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics review of the 962 fatal workplace injuries at road construction sites from 2003 to 2010, 443 were due to a worker being struck by a vehicle or mobile equipment.
- Between 1992 and 2009, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and state partners investigated the deaths of 36 workers killed by backing construction vehicles or equipment on roadway construction worksites through the Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation FACE Program.
- In the United States, more than 800 construction workers die every year while on the job. Being struck by vehicles, heavy equipment, and other objects is the top cause of injuries and the second cause of death for construction workers.
- Struck-by incidents contributed to 804 construction worker fatalities from 2011 to 2015, the most of any major industry, according to a report from the Center for Construction Research and Training.
- According to the National Safety Council, one out of four vehicle accidents can be blamed on poor backing techniques.
- Backing accidents cause approximately 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries each year.
