Dusts & Fibers
Dusts are solid particles that are formed by handling, crushing, grinding, drilling, or blasting materials. Fibers are solid particles whose length is at least three times greater than its width.
Dusts are measured as a concentration of airborne particles in a given space and are measured in either milligrams or micrograms per cubic meter of air (mg/m3) or (µg/m3). Fibers are measured in fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc).
Dust and fibers can irritate the eyes and nose, and prolonged exposure to toxic dust can result in chronic health effects. Examples of dusts and fibers found in the construction industry include crystalline silica, asbestos, metal dusts, lead-based paint, and fiberglass.
