Causes of CTDs

CTDs can be caused by the following activities that are common to construction work:

  • Repetitive motions
  • Forceful exertions- pulling, pushing, lifting, and gripping
  • Awkward postures- body positions that are not the neutral position
  • Static postures- body positions held without moving
  • Compression of the soft tissues in the hand against edges or ridges, such as using tools that press against the palm
  • Vibration, especially when the weather or jobsite is cold

When there has not been sufficient recovery time (such as rest breaks or days off), the risk of developing a CTD from the activities listed above can increase.
