Hand-arm Vibration Syndrome
Construction tools like chainsaws, impact drills, jackhammers, soil compactors, and other power tools transfer high amounts of vibration to the hands, arms, and body when in operation. Sometimes this vibration can be so intense that it damages blood vessels and nerves in the hands or arms, causing a syndrome called "white finger" or "hand-arm vibration syndrome" (HAVS).
Symptoms of HAVS include discolored or white fingertips that get whiter or more discolored in cold weather. This syndrome can progress to loss of grip strength and even gangrene in severe cases.
While HAVS can be prevented with proper tool usage and hand protection, it cannot be cured once you have it.
