Overhead Work Solutions
Materials- changing the types of materials used for an overhead task may reduce the amount of time you will need to reach overhead. For example, embedding concrete inserts into ceiling forms can eliminate the need to drill overhead to put them in after the ceiling is installed. However, this type of solution requires working with the engineer, building owner, or general contractor and is often not an employee-level decision.
Work Rules- sometimes simple work rule changes can be the answer to ergonomic health issues. Employers can require employees to take mandatory rest breaks after working a set amount of time with their arms over their heads.
Tools- tools are available with special extensions that allow you to complete tasks without having to lift your arms overhead. Examples of these tools include:
- Bit extensions for drills and screw guns.
- Extension poles for powder-actuated tools (PAT) that can reduce the amount of recoil shock to shoulders and neck.
- Mechanical lifts or hoists that bring the worker nearer to the ceiling or that hoist heavy materials to within arm's reach.
- Spring-assisted drywall finishing mud boxes and corner finishers.
- Pneumatic drywall finishing tools.
When management and employees work together, the best solutions for overhead ergonomics hazards can be identified and put into practice.
