Risk of Injury
You have an increased risk for musculoskeletal disorders if you are required to:
- Carry heavy loads
- Work on your knees
- Stretch to work overhead
- Twist your hands or wrists repeatedly
- Work in confined spaces or hold one position for long periods of time
- Use certain types of tools that cause pressure points
- Use vibrating tools or equipment
If you are unable to rest when you are tired, or are pushed at a pace that does not allow your muscles to recover, you are also at increased risk for injury. Many construction workers think that strains and sprains are "part of the business" and unavoidable. However, there are a growing number of specialized tools and work procedures available to reduce injuries from work duties like those listed above. Sometimes even a small change in tools, equipment, or procedures can make a big difference in injury prevention.
