Tip No. 1: Know Your Work Space
Examining your work space before you begin a task may help you select the right hand tool to use. You should select a tool that allows you to perform the work comfortably within the space available.
When working in cramped spaces:
- Long-handled tools may not be the best choice because they may require awkward postures, strenuous arm positioning, or uncomfortable contact pressures on your hands.
- Short-handled tools may work better to reach your target area while keeping your wrist straight.
- Pinch-grip tools may allow for precision work, but your hand will tire more easily and cannot grip as forcefully.
- A tool with an extension that reaches into the narrow space while your hand remains outside can enable a power grip posture.
