Tips for Selecting Hand Tools

An ergonomic hand tool is one that:

  • Accomplishes the job
  • Allows you to do the job without awkward hand or wrist positioning
  • Reduces the amount of force you need to apply
  • Fits in your hand without causing uncomfortable pressure points

Sometimes tools that claim to be ergonomic actually make the situation worse! They may be poorly manufactured, or have contoured handles that fit only certain-sized hands. Refer to the ergonomic checklist at the end of this section when selecting hand tools.
