Cabinets, Boxes, and Fittings

Conductors entering cabinets, cutout boxes, and fittings must be protected from abrasion. Openings, both used and unused, through which conductors enter must be effectively closed.

All pull boxes, junction boxes, and fittings must have covers identifying the purpose. Metal covers must be grounded. In completed installations, each outlet box must have a cover, faceplate, or fixture canopy. Outlet box covers with holes through which flexible cords pass must have bushings designed for the purpose or smooth, well-rounded surfaces on which the cords can rest.

Pull boxes and junction boxes for systems of more than 600 volts, nominal, must provide a complete enclosure for the contained conductors or cables. Boxes must be closed by suitable covers securely fastened in place. Covers for boxes must be permanently marked "HIGH VOLTAGE." The marking must be on the outside of the box cover and must be readily visible and legible.
