Conductors for General Wiring

All conductors used for general wiring must be insulated. The conductor insulation must be of a type that is approved for the voltage, operating temperature, and location of use. Insulated conductors must be distinguishable by appropriate color or other suitable means as being grounded conductors, ungrounded conductors, or equipment grounding conductors.

Flexible Cords and Cables

Flexible cords and cables must be approved for their conditions of use and location. Flexible cords and cables may be used only in specified circumstances, such as the following:

• Pendants
• Wiring or fixtures
• Connection of portable lamps or appliances
• Elevator cables
• Wiring of cranes and hoists
• Connection of stationary equipment to facilitate their frequent interchange
• Prevention of the transmission of noise and vibration
• Appliances where the fastening means and mechanical connections are designed to permit removal for maintenance and repair

In some circumstances, the flexible cord must have an attachment plug and must be energized from an approved receptacle outlet.

Unless specifically permitted, flexible cords and cables cannot be used in the following ways:

• As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure
• Run through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors
• Run through doorways, windows, or similar openings
• Attached to building surfaces
• Concealed behind building walls, ceilings, or floors
