Content of Training

Employees must be trained in and familiar with the safety-related work practices that pertain to their respective job assignments. Employees in the occupations discussed on the previous slide, who face a higher than normal risk of electrical accident but who are not qualified people, must also be trained in and familiar with any electrically related safety practices that are necessary for their safety, even if these practices are not specifically addressed by the OSHA Construction Electrical Standard.

To be qualified, that is, permitted to work on or near exposed energized parts, a person must, at a minimum, be trained in and familiar with the following:

  • The skills necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electrical equipment
  • The skills necessary to determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts
  • The voltage clearance distances relevant to work on energized equipment and the corresponding voltages to which the qualified person will be exposed

The training required may be provided in the classroom or on the job. The degree of training provided must be determined by the risk to the employee.
