General Work Practices

Employers must protect employees from coming into contact with an electric power circuit that the employee could contact in the course of work. The employer must protect the employee against the shock by de-energizing the circuit and grounding it or by guarding it effectively through insulation or other means.

Before beginning work, employers must find out whether any part of an energized electric power circuit, whether exposed or concealed, is located in a place where employees may bring themselves or a tool into physical or electrical contact with the power circuit. If such a circuit exists, employers must post proper warning signs and advise employees of the location of the line, the hazards involved, and the protective measures to be taken.
