Guarding of Live Parts, 600 Volts or Less

Live parts of electrical equipment, operating at 600 volts or less, must be guarded against accidental contact. This can be accomplished by using approved cabinets or other forms of approved enclosures, or by any of the following means:

  • Location in a room, vault, or similar enclosure that is accessible only to qualified people
  • Suitable permanent, substantial partitions or screens
  • Elevated placement on a suitable balcony, gallery, or platform
  • Elevation of eight feet or more above the floor or other working surface

In locations where electrical equipment is likely to be exposed to physical damage, enclosures or guards must be arranged and strong enough to prevent such damage. Entrances to rooms and other guarded locations that contain exposed live parts must be marked with conspicuous warning signs forbidding unqualified people to enter.
