Construction Focus Four

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is committed to helping workers in the construction industry understand the hazards they face and what their employer's responsibilities are for protecting them from workplace hazards.

Almost seven million people were employed in the construction industry in 2017 - approximately 4% of the workforce in the United States. Yet, out of 4,674 worker fatalities in private industry in the 2017 calendar year, 971 (20.7%) were in construction. In other words, construction workers in 2017 made up approximately 4% of the workforce but 20% of all work-related deaths.

Among on-the-job construction fatalities, the leading cause of death is falling, followed by struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/caught-between.

OSHA's effort to help construction workers better understand these four categories of high-risk hazards is called "Construction Focus Four."
