Rights & Responsibilities

Employers and workers alike have responsibilities. In the following slides we will break these out for you. Employers have a general duty to provide a workplace that is both safe and healthy. In doing so, they provide a workplace that is free from identified hazards. In order to meet this requirement, employers must do the following:

  • Comply with OSHA standards, rules, and regulations
  • Establish, update, and communicate workplace operating procedures
  • Regularly examine workplace conditions to ensure that they meet OSHA standards
  • Provide medical examinations and training when required by OSHA standards

More specifically, an employer's responsibility to prevent injuries in the workplace includes the following:

  • Posting the OSHA poster about worker safety rights
  • Using labels, pictograms, signage, and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) to warn employees of potential hazards
  • Providing safety training in a language that workers can understand
