Safe Ladder Use

  • Set up extension ladders at an angle with a 1:4 ratio horizontal to vertical length.
  • Never use the top rung as a step because there is nothing for workers to hold onto, and the resulting instability can lead to serious injury.
  • Do not use ladders that have loose rungs, cracked side rails, missing foot pads, or other visible damage. Keep rungs free of slippery substances.
  • Do not use metal ladders within 50 feet of power lines.
  • No more than one person at a time should use the ladder.
  • Always face the ladder when climbing up or down.
  • Always have at least three points of contact with the ladder - either two feet and one hand, or one foot and two hands.

Just because ladders are one of the most common pieces of equipment on a construction site does not mean they are safe. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction and every year falls from ladders make up nearly a third of those deaths. Falls from ladders can be prevented and lives can be saved by following the safe work practices described here.

Simple Steps to Prevent Falls from Ladders

  1. Choose the right ladder for the job.
  2. Tie the top and bottom of the ladder to fixed points when necessary.
  3. Do not carry tools or other materials in-hand while climbing the ladder.
