Additional Hazards
The following are all additional hazards of hot work:
UV damage - The intense light produced by arc welding and cutting can produce high levels of UV rays that, without proper protective equipment, can cause skin and eye damage.
Heat stress - Hot work by its nature radiates heat to the operator. This can especially be dangerous when working in warm conditions outside. Operators are encouraged to stay hydrated to avoid heat stress and exhaustion.
Noise - Some types of hot work, particularly welding, brazing, and grinding can produce high levels of noise. Prolonged exposure to high decibels can damage hearing permanently. Operators are encouraged to wear some form of noise protection when working in a loud environment.
Vibration - Hand and arm vibrations and inadequate recovery time when workers use pneumatic tools associated with hot work can lead to internal trauma. These tools (primarily handheld, pneumatic grinders) are often used for removing paint or corrosion in preparation for hot work, or in dressing welds.
Falling or rolling injuries from cylinders - Fuel cylinders used to power hot work equipment can cause personal injury particularly if they are improperly secured or stored. When welding or cutting is being performed in any confined space, the gas cylinders must be left outside the confined area.
