Burns - Retinal

Unlike thermal burns, retinal burns can occur without actually touching the ignition source. Merely exposing your eyes to the bright light produced by welding and cutting can cause permanent damage to your eyes.

Typically, arc cutting produces the highest temperatures and therefore the brightest light. Multiple levels of eye protection may be required when arc welding. Suitable eye protection should be worn while performing any type of hot work. The brighter the light produced, the heavier the shade used must be. We will discuss additional personal protective equipment for hot work later in the course.
